Program Description
Targeted Skills Instruction is a live, small-group virtual tutoring program for K-12 reading and math, delivered in 30–45-minute sessions three or more times per week. Each session follows a gradual release model of direct instruction, collaborative, guided practice and independent work with tutor support. Instruction is supported by Edmentum’s Exact Path Growth, a computer-adaptive supplemental program.
Program Outcomes
Across one regression discontinuity study including 1,077 students in grades 3, 4 and 6, Edmentum’s virtual small-group tutoring program, Targeted Skills Instruction (TSI), demonstrated a positive impact on ELA outcomes. The study was conducted across 23 schools in a large urban New Jersey district during the 2024-2025 academic year. Students were assigned to TSI based on fall Exact Path Insights diagnostic scores at or below the 25th percentile. Tutoring was delivered virtually in small groups of 2-6 students in three 30-40 minute sessions per week across three 6-week cycles. The study sample was predominantly economically disadvantaged (79%), with high proportions of multilingual learners (21%) and students with disabilities (16%). On average, students attended 25.5 tutoring sessions over the year out of a possible 50 scheduled sessions, reflecting typical implementation variability in a real-world school setting. Students who received TSI scored significantly higher than comparison students on the spring NJSLA ELA assessment (effect size = +0.48). This evidence supports a Strong rating.
