Program Description

The 95 Phonics Lesson Library (PLL) is a comprehensive phonics program for Tier 2, small-group instruction, complete with ready-to-use lesson plans, and all relevant teacher and student materials. PLL breaks down phonics mastery into 75 distinct subskills, separated into 3 levels: Basic, Advanced, and Multisyllabic. For each of the 75 components of phonics, educators (especially those armed with the results from the 95 Phonics Screener for Intervention) have the tools they need to target specific skill gaps with precision.

Program Outcomes

The impact of 95 Phonics Lesson Library (PLL) has been examined in two matched studies. The first study was carried out in a California school district during the 2021–2022 school year. A total of 8 schools and more than 400 1st grade students participated in this quasi-experimental study, where treatment schools used PLL with students identified as Below or Well Below Benchmark on an early literacy screening assessment. Students were tested with the Phonics Screener for Intervention every three weeks as part of the implementation to target instruction.  Compared to comparison schools, schools that used PLL had increased composite scores on the Acadience Reading assessment (effect size = +0.23). This was statistically significant, earning PLL a Moderate ESSA rating.

The second study took place with 386 4th and 5th grade students from 5 schools in an Ohio city school district during the first semester of the 2023-2024 school year. Two schools were selected to use 95 PLL and three schools served as the comparison. Across grades, students using 95 PLL as Tier 2 and Tier 3 intervention demonstrated significantly greater growth on the Acadience Reading assessment at mid-year than students in comparison schools (effect size = +0.18). These results also qualify for a Moderate ESSA rating. There was an additional full year analysis but given it was with the subset of students who scored lower on MAP at pretest and had Acadience Reading and NWEA MAP Reading posttest scores, the results are not factored into the overall average effect size. It should still be noted that Acadience and MAP Growth assessments showed significant improvement in reading scores for 95 PLL students relative to the comparison group (effect sizes = +0.19, +0.30 respectively), especially among the fifth grade students. These strong results for 5th grade students also held true on the Ohio State Test (effect size =+0.54).
