Program Description
Pacific CHILD was designed for use with children in Hawaii, Samoa, and other Pacific territories, especially English learners. It provides professional development to teachers over a two-year period. The program emphasizes vocabulary, cooperative learning, phonics, and question generation. Each year, teachers participate in a 10-day summer institute, three mini-institutes during the school year, and twice monthly classroom observations and demonstrations. Teachers participate in team meetings in their schools.
Program Outcomes
Pacific CHILD was evaluated in a large 2-year study in Samoa, Hawaii, and the Northern Marianas. On SAT-10 tests, students in Pacific CHILD scored significantly higher than controls, with an effect size of +0.24. This qualifies Pacific CHILD for the ESSA “Strong” category.
