Program Description
Math Expressions is a reform-oriented curriculum that balances teaching of efficient procedures with promoting children’s natural solution methods. Each day, children in Math Expressions begin with routines involving calendars, money, number charts, and counting. The teacher then introduces fluency activities and instruction in new mathematical ideas. Students practice new skills in pairs, small groups, or individually.
Program Outcomes
One study in grades 1 and 2 compared Math Expressions to a more traditional textbook, Scott Foresman/Addison Wesley. Students in both groups gained significantly more in Math Expressions than in the control group, with an effect size of +0.11. This qualifies Math Expressions for the ESSA “Strong” category.
