Program Description

Magma Math is a digital math platform designed to support student-centered mathematical learning and discourse in grades 4–8. Students solve problems on a digital canvas using keyboard or stylus input, showing their full problem-solving process rather than just a final answer. Teachers assign problems, view student work in real time through heatmaps and data dashboards, and use student solutions to drive classroom discussion and differentiated instruction. Magma Math is grounded in research on mathematical discourse and formative assessment, and is accessible on any internet-connected device.

Program Outcomes

Magma Math was evaluated in a quasi-experimental study during the 2024–25 school year with 1,686 students in grades 4–8 across 13 schools in a public Ohio district. The sample was predominantly White (40%) and African American (32%), with 15% identified as English learners and 19% with an Individualized Education Plan. Researchers matched 843 Magma Math users with 843 non-users on baseline math scores and demographics. Students who used Magma Math in grades 4–5 scored significantly higher on the spring i-Ready Mathematics assessment than their matched peers who did not use the program (effect size = +0.12), earning Magma Math a Promising rating. For students in grades 6–8, those who used Magma Math also outscored non-users, though this difference was not statistically significant (effect size = +0.07).

Staffing Requirements

No additional staff are required to implement Magma Math. Magma Math’s District Success team partners closely with schools to ensure that teachers are able to effectively use Magma Math in the classroom, promoting student-led discourse and data-driven instruction.

Professional Development/Training

Magma Math offers both live and asynchronous training and continued Professional Learning for all district partners. Beginning with onboarding, teachers learn Magma features including assignment creation and the Heatmap. Following the initial onboarding period, Magma Math offers ongoing Professional Learning focused on topics such as Data Driven Instruction, Discourse Routines, and using Magma for intervention.

In addition to Magma Math’s robust Professional Learning, Magma Academy is available on-demand for additional product training, and Magma Math’s Support team is available via chat for in-the-moment support.

Technology

Magma Math is accessible through any modern web browser with no required downloads or plug-ins and is also available as a dedicated iPad app. This ensures seamless use across Chromebooks, laptops, and tablets, supporting consistent access for students and teachers in both in-person and remote environments.
