Program Description
Flashlight360 is a tool designed to monitor and assess progress in speaking and writing for multilingual students. It provides scoring and feedback across five areas of speaking and three areas of writing, helping students demonstrate their language skills. By delivering actionable data, Flashlight360 supports teachers in offering constructive feedback, a proven approach to accelerating language development. This tool aims to guide both teachers and students in their efforts toward language proficiency, fostering growth through focused and meaningful feedback.
Program Outcomes
The impact of Flashlight360 was evaluated in a retrospective study with grade 1-12 ELL students in a suburban district in a large western state. Over 4,000 students using Flashlight360 for one year and approximately 300 students using Flashlight360 for two years were propensity-score matched with similar students not exposed to the program. On the WIDA ACCESS assessment, one-year treatment students outgained matched comparison students by more than 4 points, while two-year treatment students outgained matched comparison students by more than 6 points. When examining WIDA ACCESS Writing and Speaking subscale scores, one-year treatment students significantly outgained matched comparison students by more than 10-points on both subscales, while two-year treatment students directionally outgained comparison students. The significantly positive impacts of Flashlight360 on WIDA ACCESS composite scores for both one-year (effect size = +0.10) and two-year (effect size = +0.13) students earns Flashlight360 a Promising ESSA rating.
