Program Description
Elements of Reading: Comprehension is a supplementary program designed to be used along with ordinary basal textbooks to enhance the comprehension skills of students in the intermediate grades. It uses authentic literature to teach vocabulary, comprehension, and writing skills, in a series of 5-day lesson sequences emphasizing multiple readings, discussions, and practice opportunities. Teachers participate in a 3-hour workshop to learn the program.
Program Outcomes
One study evaluated Elements of Reading: Comprehension, primarily in third grades. Positive effects compared to control groups were found on Gates-MacGinitie and ERDA measures. These averaged an effect size of +0.07. This is sufficient for the ESSA “Promising” category.
