Program Description

Reach for Reading is a comprehensive K-6 Common Core reading program. The program incorporates multicultural literature paired with content and real-world accounts from National Geographic. It includes eight units, each with four weeks of instructional plans for whole group, small group, and independent reading times. Each unit is organized around a science or social studies theme aimed at developing students’ knowledge of the content areas.

Program Outcomes

One cluster randomized study evaluated Reach for Reading in 28 classrooms across 7 schools. In comparison to a control group, third grade students in classrooms using Reach for Reading scored significantly higher on the Gates-MacGintie Total Reading (effect size of +0.14), qualifying Reach for Reading for the ESSA “Strong” category. There were significant differences for students who qualified for free lunch and for LEP students as well.
