Program Description
Comprehension Circuit Training uses content delivered to students on tablet computers to teach reading comprehension skills. Following video instruction, students work with a partner to practice lesson content. They cycle through four major components: vocabulary, pre-reading, reading of iBooks, and after-reading, which includes comprehension quizzes. Teachers monitor progress and answer questions, though only the after-reading segment includes direct teacher instruction.
Program Outcomes
Two large studies evaluated CCT in disadvantaged middle schools. Both found modest positive outcomes, averaging an effect size of +0.13. A Texas study found significant positive effects on TOSREC, making CCT qualify for the ESSA “strong” category.
