Program Description

Lexia English Language Development is a blended learning program designed to accelerate academic English proficiency for English Learners (ELs) in grades K–6. The program integrates interactive, student-directed online lessons with teacher-led instruction focused on oral language, grammar, and vocabulary. Activities use speech recognition to provide immediate feedback as students practice listening and speaking in academic contexts across 19 content-based levels (e.g., science, math, social studies). Teachers receive real-time progress data and small-group lesson plans aligned with English Language Development (ELD) state standards. Lexia English Language Development can be implemented during ELD, literacy, or intervention blocks as a supplement to core instruction.

Program Outcomes

Lexia English Language Development was evaluated in a quasi-experimental study across three public school districts in California during the 2021–2022 school year. The study examined outcomes for 1,452 English Learners in grades 1–5 on the English Language Proficiency Assessment for California (ELPAC) and for 615 English Learners in grades 3–5 on the Smarter Balanced English Language Arts (SBAC) assessment. Students who used the program were compared to matched peers who did not, with analyses controlling for prior achievement and demographic characteristics. Results showed statistically significant positive effects on both English language proficiency and literacy. Students using Lexia English Language Development scored higher than comparison students on the Overall ELPAC (effect size = +0.23) and the SBAC (effect size of +0.22). Effects were strongest among students with lower baseline English proficiency. These findings qualify Lexia English Language Development for a Moderate evidence rating.
