Program Description
BookNook is a virtual tutoring provider focused on reading intervention solutions. BookNook uses a synchronous teaching platform and curriculum grounded in the science of reading to deliver high-dosage tutoring services to K-8 students. Students meet with the same tutor and small group of students to build relationships and to facilitate the tutor to develop an understanding of each student’s strengths and skill gaps. Tutoring is delivered to students through BookNook’s virtual platform. At the core of every BookNook lesson is a text and their model features lessons that support students in building phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension skills.
Program Outcomes
The impact of BookNook was examined in a cluster-randomized study that took place in six Rocketship public charter schools in Northern California. Cohorts of first through fourth grade students were randomly assigned within grades to receive BookNook two to three times per week for 30-minute sessions over a 12-week period. The final sample included 1,777 students (n=959 treatment, 818 control), of whom 79% were Hispanic, 9% Black, 8.6% Asian, and 2.4% white. ELL students represented just over half of the sample, and 9.5% of students received special education services. After 12 weeks, students in cohorts assigned to receive BookNook demonstrated significantly more growth than the control group on the NWEA MAP (ES = +0.05), qualifying BookNook for an ESSA “Strong” rating. For students receiving the recommended dosage (20 or more sessions), results were markedly stronger (effect size = +0.26).
